2019 AEC Excellence Awards: Construction Finalists Announced

Now in its eighth year, the AEC Excellence Awards is proud to highlight the innovators behind some of the most stunning infrastructure and building projects from all over the world. These bold visionaries have integrated Connected BIM into their workflows, in addition to emerging technologies like generative design and industrialized construction.

The finalists in this list rose from a field of over 180 entries with submittals from 40 countries.  Autodesk is especially proud that these awards spotlight innovation on a global scale. The winners will be presented at the AEC Customer Showcase Celebration breakfast at Autodesk University Las Vegas on November 19. 

Without further ado, the finalists in the Construction category:

 

Chase Center & Warriors Mixed-Use Office and Retail Development  - United States

AEC-Chase-Center---Mortenson-Construction

Mortenson | Clark, in a Joint Venture with Kendall/Heaton Associates, are bringing a new, state-of-the-art complex that will be the home of NBA Champions Golden State Warriors. The Chase Center is a sports and entertainment venue for more than 200 events annually, including concerts, family shows, conventions, and community events. The 18,000-seat arena anchors a site that also includes two 11-story office buildings, a broadcast studio, and 29 unique retail locations.

 

Terminal Area Construction Project of Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (Section I) - China

China Construction Eighth Engineering Division LTD is undertaking an ambitious aesthetic in this airport design. With a planned construction area of 1.26 million square meters, it has been specifically designed to highlight concepts of humanity, wisdom and environmental protection. The form of the terminal building is meant to evoke the Solar Divine Bird with spread wings. A cornerstone of the Silk Road Economic Belt, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is an international aviation hub located in Jianyang City.

 

South Plot Project, 616, 735, Xiaodongmen Street, Shanghai - China

AEC-South-Slot---China-ConstructionChina Construction Eighth Engineering Division partnered with East China Architectural Design and Research Institute to create this mixed-use facility which overlooks the Huangpu River. It will be developed into a complex of office, commercial, hotel and residential facilities, covering an area of over 59 thousand square meters. The construction team highlighted how advanced BIM processes, including construction simulation and optimization were critical in this project,  reducing rework by 20%.

 

ATRIO - Colombia

AEC-Atrio-APRO

ATRIO by Arpro EllisDon JV (AED) with Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners is a mixed-use commercial development in downtown Bogotá, Colombia. Once complete, the project will feature two towers with a large, open-to-the-public space at the ground level. Known as the “new heart of Bogotá”, this project marks an innovative leap forward in digital construction in Colombia.

 

University of Arizona Health Sciences Innovation Building - United States

Kitchell with CO Architects and Swaim Associates is creating a remarkable addition to the UA Health Sciences campus. This state-of-the-art instructional space features flexible group/team learning areas, clinical labs, and simulation centers for a broad spectrum of instructional applications within a 220,000-square-foot structure.

 

E03 - E05 Wembley - United Kingdom

AEC-Wembley-John-Sisk

John SISK & Son with PRP Architects are making their mark on London’s skyline with these stunning towers. The design scheme comprises 10 buildings across 2 blocks, ranging from 12 to 26 storeys with 1200 flats, linked at ground level by a podium-level garden. Sited on the edge of a new public park, the complex fronts this new social heart, encouraging a close-knit, active and inclusive community. A residential landmark, it was built with the most advanced digital technologies.

 

CANVAS - United States

AEC-Windover-Construction---CANVAS

Windover Construction, Inc. with SV Design have broken new ground in their use of BIM, laser scanning and drones to improve on-site coordination with this mixed-use modular project. The upscale transit-oriented development covers 153,000 square feet with a combined 126 units and 8,500 square feet of street-level retail/restaurant space. Modular construction is being used to address the site constraints and to expedite the construction process. Coordinating a project of this complexity required novel applications of Autodesk software which have been used to mitigate risk, enhance quality, and increase efficiencies for the project.

 

Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden - Canada

ZYF Construction Group Co. is bridging the old with the new in this project. Located more than 100 miles away from Toronto, this rebuilding of an ancient Chinese temple complex fused digital construction principles with ancient design. The Daxiong Hall under construction was designed based on the blueprint of the eastern palace of the Great Foguang Temple from the Tang Dynasty in Mount Wutai in China, utilizing BIM technology to facilitate this new structure. 

 

Historical Museum of Imperial Kiln, Jingdezhen - China

China Construction First Group Limited partnered with Studio Zhu-Pei to create this cultural museum commemorating the Imperial Kiln, located in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. Jingdezhen has long been celebrated for its production of china, anchoring this museum as a regional touchstone. This museum’s structure comprises eight unique arches with variable curvature, decorated with 300-year-old kiln bricks. It is the only museum in the world that displays the culture of a millennium royal kiln.
