Design collaboration is nothing new for Fentress Architects and Hennebery Eddy Architects, Inc., but the two firms are taking it to the next level on their Portland International Airport (PDX) Terminal Balancing project. Fully embracing cloud-based collaboration technology, they are truly working as one design team, using Autodesk Collaboration for Revit and BIM 360 Team to centralize their two design teams in the cloud.

The PDX Terminal Balancing Project
The Portland International Airport Terminal Balancing Project (PDX) is a large project aimed at distributing the flow of traffic and activity throughout the airport. In order to stay on the same page during all phases of the project, all stakeholders used a BIM 360 Team project hub to provide access to project data to the entire team. This included the owner and owner representatives, several contractors, the design team, consultants, engineers, and architects from both firms.
The design team working in Autodesk Revit used Collaboration for Revit to:
- Virtually co-locate.
- Enable multi-user co-authoring of the Revit models in the project by design team members in distributed locations.
- Work together in real-time.
- Share model changes and updates as they occurred.
Conventional sharing technology could limit model sharing to periodic updates, making it difficult to stay current, and present challenges like outdated IT support requirements and a need to completely rebuild infrastructure.
To enable collaborative co-location and reduce file sharing challenges, Fentress and Hennebery Eddy looked into BIM 360 Team and Collaboration for Revit and found that these combined solutions fit their immediate project needs. Because these are cloud-based solutions, they eliminate the need to set up new IT infrastructure. Not only did this keep the latest models in the hands of the design team, it also enabled contributors from all stakeholder groups to work on, view, and interact with the same project data:

Revit team communication was also simplified through Collaboration for Revit. Revit users were able to work on the same model, concurrently, and communicate directly with each other using the Communicator tool within Collaboration for Revit:

BIM 360 Team acted as a project center for all project participants, and Collaboration for Revit connected the Revit model, including design work and process, into the Team platform to enable virtual co-location and concurrent design on the PDX Terminal Balancing project.
