Giving Back: The Story of Jimmy Grossmann

August 8, 2019 Brian Farber

This is the story of Jimmy Grossmann, National Chief Operating Officer for Suffolk, a general contracting firm headquartered in Boston with offices throughout the country. At first blush, Jimmy’s story may not seem unlike the millions of other hardworking individuals in construction who reshape communities and city skylines every day. But Jimmy’s story is a unique narrative that has come full circle.

Jimmy grew up in the Orient Heights development in East Boston. It was here where he discovered his passion—right out of high school, he took advantage of a City of Boston jobs program for economically disadvantaged residents that introduced him to the construction industry. His first project was the redevelopment of his own three-block, low-income neighborhood of Orient Heights.

He would go on to manage many more projects. Throughout his career, his fingerprints can be found on some of Suffolk’s most iconic, transformative projects such as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences, Four Seasons at One Dalton, Encore Boston Harbor Resort and Casino and many more projects that continue to revolutionize the way buildings are constructed (see Suffolk's project portfolio).

Nearly thirty years later, Jimmy heads up operations for Suffolk and is responsible for crisscrossing the entire country servicing clients and overseeing some of the most sophisticated projects in the industry. But there is one project that has a special place in his heart—Orient Heights in East Boston.

Jimmy is currently overseeing another redevelopment and complete transformation of the neighborhood where he grew up, first discovered construction and was given an opportunity to build a life. And he has never forgotten where he came from. Just as he was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to start a career in the industry he loved, he is now committed to helping others seize opportunities to build their own careers and lives for themselves and their families.
